Body Piercing

Body Piercing Program In 1999, the Florida Legislature passed a law to regulate Body Piercing Facilities (As defined in 64E-19FAC & 381.0085FS). Body Piercing is an evasive procedure that may present the potential for infection. Not only can piercing lead to infections of the pierced site (Especially if required after care instructions are not followed), but it also has the potential to transmit Blood borne Pathogens like Hepatitis B & C and HIV, if minimum sanitary and safety standard are not followed.

The Broward County Health Department’s Environmental Health section and Public Health Nursing conduct annual inspections of these facilities. Body Piercers are also required to obtain annual training in safety, sterilization and sanitation. Since 2000, The Broward County Health Department has provided twice a year training courses, so piercers can be updated on rule changes, have educational speakers and discuss issues in their profession.
