To avoid contracting a mosquito-borne disease, we recommend the following:

  • Avoid outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are likely to be looking for blood meals
  • If you must be outdoors when mosquitoes are active, cover up by wearing shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts
  • Use mosquito repellant
  • Eliminate stagnant water in birth baths and any other receptacles in which mosquitoes might breed

What is Rabies?

  • Rabies is a disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system
  • It is found in the saliva of infected animals
  • If not treated, rabies almost always results in fatal encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain and its membranes

How do I protect myself from the Rabies Virus?

  • Don't feed wild animals
  • Be a responsible pet owner. Keep all vaccinations, especially rabies, up to date for all dogs, cats, and ferrets
  • Keep your pets under direct supervision so they do not come into contact with wild animals
  • Don't leave pet food, or any food, outside that may attract wild animals
  • Spay or neuter your pets
  • Call your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood
